Art of the title

Art of the title
Bojack Horseman
http://www.artofthetitle.com/title/bojack-horseman/

The first title i have picked out is a title sequence from the original Netflix series about a one hit wonder tv actor, called Bojack Horseman. The story follows him realising how mediocre his life is and that his best years were in the 90's when he had his own tv show. But without even watching the tv series you can tell from the title sequence that he is miserable and you can tell what his outlook on life is and his feelings.
This is the first thing you see of the title sequence, Bojacks house its a big mountain side house in a mock up or equivalent of LA, showing us that he is wealthy.
The camera then zooms into the house and we see the image of Bojack sleeping in his bed. So far so good. Except from the glass of whiskey by his bed. Showing you what kind of person he is. He possibly might have just had it once, or maybe he is an alcoholic and he is dependant on alcohol to sleep? He is also sleeping alone, with no sign of anyone else ever being in his bed because of his positioning. Giving off the idea that he is single.
He then wakes up, VERY suddenly. Its not a easy slow wake, its a sudden, eyes wide open wake. And upon watching the rest of the sequence you can tell that this is a daily thing for him. So every morning he wakes up, scared almost. From the second he is awake.

We then follow him, through his room and into the rest of his house, with his face in main shot. The only emotion he portrays at this point in time is exhaustion. Even after just waking up.

Again with Bojack being in the middle of the shot, we follow him through his house, him still looking at the camera , exhausted , and the people involved in his house doing stuff behind him. The weird transitions between the things they are doing suggest that this is more than one day. And that he does this every day and his life is the same. He wakes up, gets dressed leaves.  There is also text on the screen at this point again, the titles are not incredibly incorporated into the frame, its just to the side and out of the
way of the main thing going on in the frame

He then goes to the store, still him in frame, his roommate, Todd, making a mess behind him. Then the paparazzi start taking pictures of him. He looks displeased with this. The fact that he is doing normal things like shopping and there is sill paparazzi suggest that they follow him everywhere an he just ignores them with a disgruntled look on his face.
Another common aspect of all of these shots is that he has a drink in his hands in most of them. It being either coffee or alcohol, agin showing what kind of person he is and that he most likely depends on it. This scene he is in a club, but he isn't dancing or taking part in the acts behind him, just like the previous shots. His mind is separate from his surroundings. He isn't a part of the things going on. He is just there.
He then gets more intoxicated during the rest of the title sequence, has vomit on his shirt, he falls back of the balcony into the pool.

He then falls into the pool, eyes still open, almost accepting of the fact that he is in the pool.
It then goes to a POV shot of a woman swimming over him. He is drowning in this pool and everyone else is just acting normally. Which could be a metaphor for his life, he needs help but he isn't getting it.. Until the next shot.

However, it isn't exactly help. Its just a lot of people looking at him, no one offering a helping hand. There are people at the side, taking pictures and even a helicopter shining a light on him. To me this suggests that because he is a celebrity, his falls are almost comical and people do not view him as a real person. Even his "friends" are not aiding him. The helicopter shining a light on him symbolises how open his life is to the public and that everyone can see everything. Its not  nice life they are portraying    for him.
He then raises his hand in-front of his face to shade himself from the light and affectively the unwanted and overwhelming attention he is getting. Showing that he is indeed not enjoying this.
It then zooms out to show him relaxing in the same pool, like everything is normal. Like he often partys, crashes out, everyone talks about his breakdown and then he goes back.
It continues to zoom out and then this is the last shot of the sequence.

Overall I think the title sequence to this tv show is near perfect, on the front its somewhat casual, but just the smallest analysation reveals so much about the show and the personalities of everyone shown in this clip to an extent that could really make or break a sequence. But this one does it so perfectly and subliminally. But working at the level we are, this would be too much of an expectation for myself and my group. But the level of description in plain sight is something that I would like our group to aspire too.

The lego movie

This is a credit sequence instead of a title sequence but I would still like to talk about it. The lego movie was a block buster movie in 2014 making a massive profit of $460.2. In my personal top 10, possibly top 5 movies of 2014.  The unique animation style of the movie mixed with some aspects of stop motion, made it really special.needs

The credit sequence has peoples names neatly placed in between the lego.

Then it starts to show the names of the voice actors of the movie. They do this in a creative way, by placing the actors name next and in lego scenes that fit the character they played. Chris Pratt played a builder called "Emmet" so they placed it in a construction site. And they continue to do this with other characters.

For example, Charlie Day played a astronaut.

I enjoy the credit sequence of this movie because its fun and personal, just like the Bojack title it shows the personalities of all the characters, but in a more blunt and obvious way.

Scott Pilgrim vs the world
http://www.artofthetitle.com/title/scott-pilgrim-vs-the-world/
Scott Pilgrim vs the world is a movie adaptation of the graphic novel written in 2004. It follows Scott battling the "7 evil exes" of a girl he likes. Although its high reviews this movie only made half of it production cost at box office. Costing $85mil to make and making $48mil at box office.

The 8bit style and music already tells you what kind of movie this is going to be, that it is going to be video game themed.

This scene setting title also sets the tone of the movie, it's not a serious movie, they refer to Toronto, Canada as " the mysterious land". It also shows what kind of people they are. The fact that he is dating a highschooler is the first thing you learn about them and the story, shows that they are not really doing much. When they tilt down to the house the theme to a video game titled "Legend of Zelda" is played. Somewhat of an easter egg for gamers and another tone setter.

Again, introducing the characters like a video game. Rating, and age.You can also get a grasp of what kind of person everyone is just from this scene. The red headed girl is a hard girl who gets straight to the point and possibly does not like Scott, which he seems to be aware off. And the young boy, "young Niel" is portrayed as a shy person, because he could barely ask a taboo question.

The animation of the "ding dong" is unique and gives us an insight to Scotts feeling for Knives. He is happy she is here.

The next few shots I have collected occur after Knives enter the house. They play a song for her and she is extremely starstruck and impressed. There are lightning bolt animations and other sound suggestive shapes when they are playing their music. Emphasising the level of volume its at and how good it is.

The room becomes longer and the title of the movie is shown with an over shoulder shot of knives and young Niell.

Then the titles appear, a simple animation with the names of actors . Different from the rest of the video genre of the movie. The names are synced and more to do with the song the band is playing..
It then cuts back to Knives left in awe and the clip stops, You still don't know what is going to happen in this movie, but you understand the characteristics of all the characters.

I picked scott Pilgrim because I like its unique style and video game narrative.

Here are two other titles I have put in my top 5, Archer and The interview
http://www.artofthetitle.com/title/the-interview/
http://www.artofthetitle.com/title/archer/

The reason I picked these titles is because of the sheer amount of thought and purpose everything in these titles have. Though ours shares none of the genres of these movies, I would like to aspire to a title sequence that is as polished as it can be. Where everything in the shot has a meaning and purpose. And there are no dragged out shots. In my opinion these titles are near perfect, and I would like to try and make something that could be compared to these. Even in  negative light.
